Tiny goes broody (briefly)

During morning rounds today, I heard a big ruckus coming from the chicken barn. I ran over to see what all the fuss was about. Peeking inside, I witnessed this ridiculously funny sight: Tiny, all squished up, (he's huge, remember) sitting in one of the bottom nesting boxes. Around him were no less than 5 noisy ladies, squawking and carrying on. From what I gathered, the conversation went something like this:

Hen 1: "Hurry, hurry, I gotta lay! I gotta lay RIGHT NOW!"

Hen 2: "My babies! Oh, my sweet babies. You're crushing them!

Tiny: {silence}

Hen 3: "Get out you big goof. You think you're sooooo funny. You're not winning any points with me."

Hen 4: "Hello, Tiny. You are a rooster. I am a hen. You have boy parts, and I have girl parts. Remember? I just explained this to you yesterday."

Tiny: {confused expression}

Hen 5: "HAHAHA HEEHEE HAAAAA HAHAAAAAAA {rolling on the floor laughing}

Tiny exits the nesting box and crows triumphantly: "See! It's not so hard what you do all day. I can lay an egg, too." (Looks back) "Oh, wait..."

Funny chickens. I'm not a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed morning person, but I'll be smiles all day today. Thanks, Tiny. That was a good one.

  8. oh my goodness jamie i wish i could have seen it. the hens must have been beside themselves.

    our petit monsieur will "find" nice nest spots for his girls (because heaven forbids they lay in their boxes). and he will find these spots and sit in them and coo and cluck to the girls as in "oooh wow! what a NICE spot to lay an egg!". then he jumps up and does a little dance around them.

    i've only seen it "work" once, where the hen promptly sat down to lay. it is a mysterious chicken world.
