reprieve

We had a little reprieve from the heat on this fine first summer solstice day. Temperatures in the mid-seventies, just the right kind of breezy, and enough clouds to shade the sun for awhile. With a sleeping baby on my back, I was able to spend a good couple hours outside weeding the raspberry patch and adding a top layer of compost. There were definitely more weeds than raspberry canes! I'm hoping this gives them much more breathing room, and that we see little flowers starting to fruit soon.

It is mighty hard work, this toiling in the soil, but the replenishing kind that reminds you sweat is good for you, and makes you grateful for a breakfast of fresh eggs just gathered. How I long for the day when most of what we consume is produced right on this very land.

After all that hard work, we took a little break, and baby had her first ice cream cone - strawberry flavor!

A perfect day for starting summer. Hope yours was just as wonderful.

  2. Beautiful day!! We went looking at farms yesterday and the biggest question I had was how to get things done with a baby. I suppose he'll just have to learn to nap on my back. I hope he gets the memo. :)

  3. What an entirely beautiful start to summer. I can't think of a better way to spend it than working the soil and spending time with those you love. We only have a bit of yard to work with as we've yet to escape to more land, but reading your posts always makes me want to make the most of what we have. Thank you for that.

  5. The ice cream looks wonderful and full of joy for the little one. I pray that those of us here in Colorado will get cooler weather and some rain. It is too hot, dry and full of worry. Enjoy the small things, they mean so much.

No reprieve from the heat here, right around 100 every day this week but we do have a 30% chance of rain for Sunday!! Woo-Hoo!!

  10. So sweet, Jaime. We've had sweltering temps in the mid-90s (with plenty of humidity), but raucous thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and night seem to have helped a bit, and the sun is shining now. I've yet to step out and see for myself whether we'll get our own little reprieve.

Oh, and I planted a blueberry bush! It's in a nice sunny spot. Any advice on care?

    1. Hi Jeannine, Blueberries! So exciting. I'm no expert, but from what I know, keep it nice and moist and keep the soil pretty acidic (with peat moss, for example). Good luck!
