Strawberry Fields

Okay, well we don't actually have a whole field of strawberries...yet. But we do have three plants that were destined for the dirt today. It turns out that fall is the perfect time for strawberry planting. (Never mind that these have been sitting in their little containers since spring). MmHm. 

Strawberries have been a bit finicky for us in the past, but these were locally grown, so I'm optimistic that they'll do well. They're the everbearing variety.

Here's where some of those pretty little yellow carrots ended up! This is "bun" (pronounced "boon"), a Vietnamese noodle dish. Perfectly refreshing for an unusually warm Fall day here. YUM!

Farmer's Market

You can't bring this home from the grocery stores, folks. The house smells of ripe cantelope, juicy heirloom tomatoes, and the last of the season's sweet corn. Even the baby smells fresher (I know, how is that even possible?!) from having been out in the morning sunshine. This was the last weekend for our local farmer's market, so we made a point to go.

My favorite thing we picked up? These heirloom carrots. Aren't they pretty? And the goats get a tasty treat, too. They love carrot tops. One customer thought for certain that these were little potatoes, and the vendor had to convince him otherwise by comparing them to actual potatoes in the next bin over. Just look at the tops; carrots, indeed!

A Barefoot-kind-of-day

The grass always feels more moist and softer in Fall, don't you think? And in all the things that need to be done for preparation in earnest now, before winter sets in, it feels so good to kick off our boots (and booties) for a moment and breathe in the crisp Autumn air.

It Must Be Fall...

Around here, we don't need a calender to tell us the autumnal equinox has begun. There are always some sure signs that it's Fall at the farm:

The goats are acting feisty (perhaps in anticipation of breeding season?) The roundup commences when Popcorn (or Big Papa as I like to call him) takes advantage of a partially opened gate. He is the master sneak-past-her!

Here's Lizzy, looking lost, after escaping out of the fenced pasture. She appears to be trying to hitchhike down the driveway, or maybe just over to the neighboring buck ;)

Fortunately this time, aside from our injured pride, the only victim of their escapades is my poor apricot tree. We'll have to see if it manages to come back in Spring. Work hard, little leaf, you're our only hope!

Of course, there are the more subtle signs of Fall as well:

 Is there anything cuter than some chubby baby legs in hand-knit legwarmers? I think not. The pattern I used for these here.

Working on a hat for my little babe, using some beautiful local, hand dyed merino yarn from Larkspur Funny Farm & Fiber Arts Studio. This one is called "Cranberry Fluff." The perfect name, yes?

Surprise Pear Tree!

What a treat. We just discovered that the lovely tree I look upon out my kitchen window while doing dishes is in fact a nicely established pear tree. This totally makes up for the young one we planted last year that fell victim to the neighbor's escaped goats! Anyone have a favorite pear recipe for the ones we haven't eaten straight off the tree yet?

I've been thinking a lot about this term lately. To my family, sustainability is closely linked to freedom--freedom to produce what we need for ourselves, freedom from any unnatural conditions for the animals we choose to raise or eat, and freedom for ethical farmers to have a fair shot at marketing their products (raw milk, for example). What does sustainability mean to you?
